Spirit Talk Mbira is a mbira (thumb piano) band which performs classical and new songs from the mbira tradition. Spirit Talk was founded by Chartwell Dutiro in London, England, in 1994. Dutiro began playing mbira in his native Zimbabwe and, as a young adult, played for a “spirit medium” at all night biras (spiritual ceremonies). He eventually toured for eight years as an mbira player, saxophonist and arranger with Zimbabwe’s internationally acclaimed, Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited. Dutiro recently received his Masters in African Music from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. He now teaches mbira at SOAS as a member of the music faculty.
